Magazine Conventions 

Codes and Conventions - systems of signs, which create meaning codes are visual/audio conventions group together to make a genre 

Textually Analyse:

  • To textually analyse is to study a media text in order to understand the various meanings. Everyone interprets things differently, so make sure you can support your interpretations!
  • Textual analysis is a skill and will be something you will work on throughout your media course

Red -  this could signify death, love or danger depending on the context and the use of colour 
Blue - this could signify sadness, scared, calmness, masculinity depending on context 
White - this could signify boring/ emptiness/ innocence
Yellow - this could signify happiness/vibrance 
Black - this could signify depressions, loneliness/ emo/death
Green - this could signify envy/ jealousy/ill/disgust

Masthead - red royalty stand out 
fonts - different fonts to catch reader attention 
colour scheme - relates to certain genres
slogan - entice "worlds best" 
cover lines - to give the reader an example of different stories in the magazine,By line -Prodigy 
main image - big and in front of the masthead this shows the importance the picture has compared to the text
Z pattern - where the readers eyes should go to first
Puffs - icons that catch the readers attention for exclusives or deals

publisher 
date

skyline/strap line 

 

Masthead - red (danger) at the top and large to grab the readers attention 
Fonts - all serif fonts to show uniform and unity within the texts except for the masthead which is a different font to entice the reader
Colour scheme - red, yellow, white, black - danger low key lighting - mystery iconography - police tape 
Slogan - "world's biggest movie magazine" - entice the reader to trust them
Cover line - exclamation marks to show excitement and to grab readers attention, listed makes his face stand out more 
By line - to a similar genre of another action film - wolverine
Main Image - is large and hint to whats going to happen to harry as he has cuts on his face  
Barcode, issue date, publisher, date



  • Title - large text, bright pink, left hand side in line with artist - her name is bigger text than rest of title 
  • pastel pink - femininity 
  • Layout/positioning - picture is larger in the middle and covers both pages 
  • Lead - beginning of the story containing who, what & where
  • image - breaks down the text, links to the text about the artist, direct address wants to make you feel included
  • image details - credit and copyright purposes
  • pull quote - highlights important aspect of an interview -hook and entice but doesn't explain why
  • colour scheme - pink, black and white - femininity different shades pop!
  • Text - titles, subheading, pull quotes and leads will be larger fonts to attract the reader
  • contact information - social media, websites, QR codes 
  • magazine logo - positioned either at the top or bottom 
  • date/page number -  at the bottom furthest points of our magazine
  • Body copy - smaller writing which your body copy is about 
- Title - large text - bigger than the rest to focus the readers on who the articles about 
- colour scheme - green- uniqueness, funky black - text white- purity which once was 
-layout/ positioning - main image takes of the whole of the second page 
-image recognisable, iconic
- body copy, small text for an older age category 
-lead is in green catches the readers eye 
-puff - exclusives makes reader. feel special and invited to extras 
- magazine logo - positioned at top left hand corner -recognisable for loyal fans
- personalisation - new information making it feel exclusive - beige text contrasts the rest of the text
